P DIDDY & THE BAD BOY FAMILY PRESENT...
WE INVENTED THE REMIX
Being responsible for some of the most important inventions known to mankind, African Americans have made their mark on history. Great masterminds include Frederick M. Jones who invented the air conditioner, Alexander Miles responsible for the elevator, or Henry Sampson who brainstormed the cellular phone. Born in the late 19th century, George Washington Carver had to his credit a number of inventions including bleach, instant coffee, mayonnaise, shampoo, and sugar. Over a hundred years later, a young Sean Combs would come up with what would be his contribution to the 20th century.
The remix.
As history would have it, Sean "Puffy" Combs invented the remix as we know it today. Yes, there were remixes before, but when Puffy did his first - the re-creation of Jodeci's "Come and Talk To Me" - he would change the way the music industry looked at remixes. "That remix alone sold 2.5 million. Before that, people used to give you the vocals and you would put the track underneath it. But we went and did the entire record over. That started a whole new era of remixes," explains P Diddy.
Puff went on to master this new genre of hip-hop. From Mary J. Blige's hit What's The 411 Remix album to the incredible classic remises done for the Notorious B.I.G., hip-hop would never be the same. "Back then, our vision was to go out and do a better record than the first one. And what it became was the true definition of hip-hop soul," says Puff. It's no wonder, then, that P. Diddy has finally come home, with his latest project, P. Diddy & Bad Boy Records Presents…..We Invented the Remix.
For P. Diddy, a remix album was inevitable. But the timing had to be right. "We had planned on doing a remix album for a long time. I went into the studio one day and realized how many remixes I was working on at one time. I knew I didn't want to let all those records go to waste, because they all had something in common."
We Invented the Remix rocks from beginning to end, and proves that it is indeed Combs who started this whole thing. "Special Delivery" features new and improved rhymes from G. Dep, and guest appearances from the likes of Ghostface Killah, Keith Murray, and none other than the original Bad Boy, Craig Mack. "All of those people have been on my remixes before, and to me, they all are so unorthodox. I always felt that "Special Delivery" was a sleeper. And with the new added flavor, this song is never gonna go away," begins Diddy.
There's also the certified hit single, "I Need A Girl" featuring Usher and Loon, a song that introduces Diddy's fans to a more personal side. But he gets even deeper on "(Part Two)," an up tempo version that features Ginuwine.
Musically, We Invented the Remix is more well rounded than any other remix album to date. On "That's Crazy," Puffy lets Black Rob, Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg, G. Dep and Craig Mack all rock on the same track, trading lyrically sharp verses over an incredible background beat. And the album wouldn't be complete without a presence from the one and only Notorious B.I.G., on "Notorious B.I.G." featuring Lil' Kim and P.Diddy. There's even the hit Ashanti remix "Unfoolish," which also features Biggie.
Smoothing it out, 112 "Dance with Me" and "Peaches and Cream" remixes both add that necessary R&B feel to the album. And on "So Complete", Puffy gets to introduce his latest R&B songstress Cheri Dennis. But the album wouldn't be complete without Carl Thomas "Woke up in the Morning" and Faith Evans "You gets no Love," which both flex Bad Boy R&B muscle.
We Invented the Remix is proof that Bad Boy "aint going nowhere." The track record shows that Puffy's Bad Boy Entertainment is the greatest success story in hip hop. With its catalog already selling close to 50 million units, Puffy's business sense cannot be questioned. "We're about to stay right in our lane. We're a special entity. We were never too hardcore or too political. All we wanted to do was to make people dance, and it took a long time to realize that doing just that was okay."
"We Invented the Remix" by P.Diddy & The Bad Boy Family is released on Bad Boy Records through BMG Australia on July 1st 2002.
