2002-11-27: SHADE SHEIST BIO

SHADE SHEIST BIO

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 27th November, 2002.

Even after scoring a hit single in 2001 with the song "Where I Wanna Be," Shade Sheist wasn't satisfied. "Last year was definitely a successful period," the 22-year old rapper says. "But I can only afford to be happy about that for a minute, take in the experience, and keep moving forward." The song, featuring Kurupt and Nate Dogg, and released as the first single of the 'Damizza Presents: Where I Wanna Be' compilation last year, was an infectious tune that traveled all over the world. It introduced Shade Sheist to an international audience hungry for a ubiquitous hip-hop presence, and has found the Inglewood native on the brink of rap stardom.

Now, on the tails of last year's successful run, Shade Sheist releases his debut long-player, 'Informal Introduction' on Baby Ree/MCA Records. Even before being featured on Damizza Presents, Shade Sheist began building his foundation with a number of guest appearances. In 1999 he made his debut on an album from 'The Murderers', produced by Irv Gotti, the song "If You Were My Bitch." After meeting Ja Rule through that experience, the connection between the two artists was apparent, and they later collaborated on the song "It's Your Life," from Ja Rule's triple-platinum-selling sophomore album, 'Rule 3:36.' Other projects include collaborations with Krayzie Bone, and appearances on several motion picture soundtracks: the Nicholas Cage film 'Snake Eyes,' 'Love Stinks,' and last year's hit film, 'The Fast and The Furious.'Shade Sheist grew up in the Southern California environs of Inglewood and South Central-Los Angeles. He considers both to be "challenging" neighborhoods, but successfully avoided getting swept up in the hustle of gang life. "I'm one of the few kids who came out alright," he admits. "I've witnessed a lot in the streets, unfortunately – I had to just by the nature of my location – but I didn't allow myself to get caught up in that."

Indeed, it's the way Shade balances the realities of his surroundings that fuels his rhyming style. "Anyone who really knows me knows that I can be very direct. I say what I have to say, and ignore the issue of offense. And when it comes to making music- as long as I keep it real, and distinguish what is fact and what is fiction, no one individual has the right to be upset with me. This is my art. And I've experienced a lot of things, so I have a lot to say." Shade really started to blossom when he met Damizza, Baby Ree's founder, in-house producer and the Senior Director of Artist Relations/Programming at influential radio station Power 106 in Los Angeles. "From the first conversation, we clicked," Sheist boasts. "We hadn't even started producing music together yet." Their combination on "Where I Wanna Be," which Damizza co-produced with Kay Gee (Naughty By Nature), was proof of their chemistry together. "When it first came out, everything from that point happened so fast I didn't even get a chance to react to all of the success it produced," Shade says. "I never thought it would span as far as places like London and Germany, with dance remixes and all that. So when it went international, all I could say was, Wow."Damizza Presents was released on Halloween of 2001 through London-Sire Records. With the usual turns of the music industry taking its toll, Shade Sheist and Baby Ree Entertainment find themselves in the throes of a new deal with MCA Records. "I'm happy about the new home, because it's finally a perfect opportunity for us to create our music and then have a good team promoting it.

The most important lesson I've learned so far, is that you need perfectly-executed promotions, otherwise the music is virtually worthless."Informal Introduction is Shade Sheist's debut full-length album. "It's more like my third or fourth," he jokes, noting that he's such a perfectionist,he's gone in several times to re-cut existing songs, and record new ones, all to create "A great introduction to who I am." The album features a member of Shade Sheist's own PaperWork Entertainment production imprint, newcomer N.U.N.E., as well as established talent like Fabolous, Knoc-turnal, Kurupt, Nate Dogg and others. Producers on board include heavy-hitters: Damizza, DJ Quik, Kay Gee and Timbaland. "I'm really happy with this album," Shade says. "It's a more accurate account of my style to-date."
