Profile: DJ EKO

In a short and spectacular career, DJ Eko has established himself as one of Australias premier Hip-Hop DJs; a 21-year-old musical talent celebrated nationally not only for the promise of his massive potential but for the magnificence of his accomplishments. Having conquered the DJ battle circuit even before his 20th birthday, claiming the prestigious DMC and ITF [NSW] crowns, the Sydney born and raised Eko boasts a resume brimming with concert, festival, television and radio appearances, along with major label production credits, a recording contract, and national corporate endorsement deals. A musician in the truest sense of the word, DJ Eko approaches the turntables as any musician would their more traditional instruments, using them to build emotion and atmosphere amongst his audience in dazzling displays of self-expression. Recognising his honest and innate aptitude for his craft, both Rane and Serato Scratch Live have secured sponsorship/endorsement deals with Eko, appointing him a national ambassador for their market-leading DJ products. Corporate interest in Eko continues to develop, including relationships with alcoholic beverage giant Jim Beam [Jim Beam Scratch DJ Project] and national Hip-Hop publication Rhyme & Reason Magazine. Rocking sold-out stadiums and concert halls across Australia, DJ Eko has shared the stage with Hip-Hops elite, from Nelly to Cypress Hill, Naughty By Nature to The Beatnuts, Q-Bert, DJ Craze, Pharcyde and DJ A-Trak [Kanye Wests DJ], amongst a host of others. His exciting performances have been documented on television via MTV and Channel V. As a recording artist, DJ Eko is signed to Australian label Unda K-9 with two national commercial releases scheduled for the latter half of 2006. The first project, a commercial mixtape CD, is to be swiftly succeeded by a production album helmed solely by the 21-year-old. Ekos impressive production credits include compositions for the likes of Proof [R.I.P.], a member of Eminems multi-platinum group D-12, and Australian MC FIGGKIDD [on his SONY/BMG released debut album], for whom Eko also serves as official DJ. With 2006 unfolding as a benchmark year for DJ Eko in Australasia, the opportunity for international pursuits presents itself as the obvious direction for the next chapter of his sprawling career. The excitement of connecting with foreign audiences has Eko eager to explore the international arena beginning with a mid-2006 trip to the US to continue work on his aforementioned production album, which he hopes to balance with a string of live performances. And given his track record, it will only be a matter of time before the name DJ Eko is echoed the world over. DJ Eko is now nominated for a UMA (urban music award) for Australia's best club dj.
